Working Paper, target: Journal of Marketing Education
Classroom engagement is an increasing challenge among education professionals. We offer one innovative method to increase classroom engagement through the implementation of a friendly participation competition. Students are grouped into teams and gain points based on their classroom participation. These points are calculated at the end of the semester and the winning team is offered a prize that is determine by the instructor. Usually, the prize information is given to the teams at the start of the competition to increase motivation throughout the semester. Using control and treatment groups, we find that this participating competition significantly increases overall classroom participation, general satisfaction with the course, student preparation, and other student outcomes. Data collection is complete and this working paper is in preparation for submission.
